Skilled nursing facilities across the United States are celebrating National Nursing Home Week (NNHW), May 14 to 20, 2017. This year’s national observance’s theme, “The Spirit of America”, highlights the bond among staff, volunteers and residents that captures the American spirit.
Events throughout the week serve to encourage acts of kindness, generosity, and compassion in skilled nursing centers, and recognize those who have helped residents enjoy a better quality of life.
“We are grateful that so many individuals are coming together to celebrate the work we do,” said Tom Watts, president and CEO of Exceptional Living Centers. “This year, we are using the power of relationships, food, entertainment and music, which captures the unique spirit of each community.”
While National Nursing Home Week provides a concentrated time for celebration, Exceptional Living Centers encourages community members to volunteer at their local skilled nursing center throughout the year.
You can volunteer at a nursing home with a variety of tasks. Opportunities vary by the center but can include:
- Visiting with residents
- Helping staff with activities
- Raising funds for resident activities
- Reading to residents or playing card games
- Joining in sensory activities with residents
- Helping with spring and fall yard work
- Helping residents with gardening
- Chaperoning resident outings
- Playing an instrument or singing
Contact your local skilled nursing centers to learn about their specific volunteer programs.
Established by the American Health Care Association (AHCA) in 1967, NNHW provides an opportunity for residents and their loved ones, staff, volunteers, and surrounding communities to acknowledge the role of skilled nursing care centers in caring for America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities. #NNHW2017
